Nordic-Baltic Competition Programme for FAF 2022

16 short films, 13 student films, 15 short films for children and 29 commissioned films have been selected for the competition programmes at the Fredrikstad Animation Festival, the leading festival for animation in the Nordic region. The festival, which takes place from 20 to 23 October, offers the best of animated films from the Nordic-Baltic countries. Over the past week, the festival’s selection committee has seen and evaluated over 160 films for the festival’s competition programme for Nordic-Baltic animated films.

The programme, which will be presented in October, offers strong visual narratives and represents the best from the animation scene in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Lithuania. Fredrikstad Animation Festival has followed the Nordic-Baltic animation scene for almost 30 years. This year’s competition programme represents the most robust impression that the production community has given the festival since it was established in 1994.

New this year is a two-part children’s programme where several films for the oldest children have been placed in a separate programme called Young Audience 12+, while the festival’s traditional children’s programme is suitable for children from the age of six.

2022 Trailer Release

FAF is back for our 25th edition and is kicking off the 2022 season with a delightful identity trailer.  We are grateful to have Ida Melum on board as the director and animator of this stop motion trailer. Ida won the high honor of the Audience Award at FAF 2021 with her award-winning graduation film, Night of the Living Dread. Joining Ida on this project were editor Lesley Posso, and composer Oli Wegmüller.

Ida Melum is an EE BAFTA nominated and Annie Award-winning animation director based in Sweden. After receiving her acting diploma in Norway, Ida earned her B.A. in animation at Middlesex University, London, and her M.A. in directing animation at the National Film and Television School.  She recently finished working on Attenborough’s Wonder of Song, a nature documentary for the BBC, and is currently freelancing and developing her new short film.

Artistic Statement:

I was really excited when Anders reached out regarding the festival trailer. It’s not often you get to do a project with so much creative freedom!
The festival usually has 2D trailers so I really wanted to create one for them in stop motion.  One thing that always comes to mind when I think of animation festivals is how varied the programs are, in one program you’ll end up seeing so many different styles, genres, and tones of films. This concept became the theme for the trailer and in the end, I managed to create three universes for our little character to get thrown into.
Our editor Lesley Posso, and composer Oli Wegmüller were excellent. Together they created a great flow for the character’s journey through timing and music. It was brilliant to have such an amazing post-production team on board!

-Ida Melum

Short films in the competition programmes

After a record-breaking registration, the competition programme for Nordic-Baltic animated short film for Fredrikstad Animation Festival is now ready. The pre-selection jury, which consisted of festival director Anders Narverud Moen, animator and filmmaker Eirin Handegaard and journalist and critic Oda Bhar, had a difficult task in selecting the best films that will be shown during Fredrikstad Animation Festival. As many as 73 films will be shown in the four competition programmes for short films, student films, commissioned films, and children’s films. The films represent most techniques and all countries in the Nordic and Baltic regions are represented. In the main program for Nordic animated short films, 10 out of 16 films have a female director.

“For many years we have had a 50/50 representation of the sexes in our programmes, but it is surprising that the films in the category for Nordic-Baltic animated short films have such a high degree of women represented. We have seen that student films have a predominance of female directors, which we can now assume gives results for this. We are very happy and proud to be able to present these women directors, ” says festival director Anders Narverud Moen in a comment on the selection process.

The juries for the competition programme are also ready, and the festival can present two diverse juries with professional filmmakers who have all made award-winning short films. The jury for Nordic-Baltic short and student film consists of illustrator and director Bendik Kaltenborn (Norway), director and animator Lizete Upíte (Latvia) and short filmmaker Jala Maghout (Syria). The jury for commissioned film consists of director and animator Eirik Heggen (Norway), producers Lana Tankosa Nikolic (Denmark) and Peter Lindblad (Sweden).

2021 Festival Trailer

The trailer for the upcoming 2021 FAF is here! We are very proud to have James Martin from Try Motion on board to make the trailer. The trailer will set the tone of this year’s festival identity and we are super happy to once again work with such creative minds.

Oslo-based production company TRY Motion is a part of TRY Huset and has a large design-driven team consisting of motion designers, animators, and 3D artists. Through a solid strategic foundation and creative approach, they create movement in customers’ communication on all visual platforms. Motion designer and animator James Martin was responsible for the concept, direction, and music of the trailer. The trailer was produced by Marianne Strandly.

James Martin was a joy to work with and we enjoyed seeing his process along the way. Here is a short statement from James about the trailer and the inspiration behind it.

“First and foremost I wanted to make something that would stand out and draw attention for the festival. The second priority (and given that I had complete freedom) was to make something completely out of the ordinary that would be fun for me to work on.

Being asked to direct and animate a trailer for an animation festival is a top honor and I wanted to be sure that I did it justice as best I could.

Taking my personal interests into account, a 70’s flavoured, sci-fi animation with three-eyed space babes, alien monsters inspired by Primal, and Ralph Bakshi character cameo’s all layered with spacey synths was the only way forward for me. However, I also wanted to pay homage and tribute to animation and more importantly wanted to encourage and excite people not only to attend the festival but also to get into the medium. To do that, although everything goes into After effects for compositing and edit, I thought it would be motivating to others if all of the art and animation was done using the most accessible tool I could think of; iPad Pro using the free app, Procreate.

I composed and recorded the music using Ableton Live and instruments from the era, Rhodes electric piano and my favorite, the ARP Odyssey.

I would very much like to thank Marianne Strandly at TRY Motion,as well as Parabol and Anders and Clara at FAF.”
