The 2023 Fredrikstad Animation Festival (FAF) was a vibrant celebration of animation, offering a diverse program that included masterclasses, competitions, live performances, and special honors.

Festival Highlights

The festival featured a rich lineup of events and screenings, showcasing the latest in Nordic-Baltic animation. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with a variety of animated works, reflecting the creativity and innovation within the animation community.

Masterclass by Hisko Hulsing

Renowned Dutch animator and director Hisko Hulsing conducted an insightful masterclass, sharing his expertise and experiences in the animation industry. Hulsing's session provided valuable knowledge to both aspiring and established animators, enhancing the educational aspect of the festival.

Short Film Competition Programs

The festival's short film competition attracted a strong selection of submissions from across the Nordic-Baltic region. The preselection committee, comprising industry professionals, meticulously reviewed over 180 submissions, totaling more than 19 hours of viewing. This diverse collection highlighted the depth and talent present in the regional animation scene.

Guest of Honor: John M. Jacobsen

Esteemed Norwegian film producer John M. Jacobsen was honored with the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Recognized for his significant contributions to the animation film industry and the advancement of visual effects in Norwegian cinema, Jacobsen's career spans over four decades, with notable works that have garnered both national and international acclaim.

Animated Live Concert Event

The festival continued its tradition of blending live music with animation through the "Animated Live" concept. Finnish Sámi artist Ánnámáret, in collaboration with visual artist and animator Marja Viitahuhta, presented a captivating concert that combined live music with video art. This performance offered a multisensory experience, enriching the festival's cultural offerings.

Award Winners

The festival concluded with an awards ceremony celebrating outstanding achievements in various categories:

  • Grand Prix: The Eastern Rain by Milly Yencken was awarded the Grand Prix for its brave and poetic visual language, effectively presenting an abstract and expressionistic narrative.

  • Audience Award: Nun or Never! by Heta Jäälinoja received the Audience Award, reflecting its popularity among festival attendees.

  • Best Nordic-Baltic Short Film: Blush – An Extraordinary Voyage by Iiti Yli-Harja was recognized for its authentic depiction of friendship and societal themes, presented through DIY crafty visuals and documentary dialogue.

  • Best Nordic-Baltic Feature Film: Rosa and the Stone Troll directed by Karla Nor Holmbäck was honored for its heartwarming narrative celebrating friendship and courage, complemented by beautiful backgrounds and an immersive musical score.

  • Best Nordic-Baltic Student FilmMano by Toke Madsen was awarded for its minimalist yet believable world-building, celebrating the resilience of brotherhood through intense atmosphere and impressive character design.

  • Best Nordic-Baltic Children’s Film: The Music Factory directed by Alf Martin Løvvold and Cina Espejord was recognized for its lively 3D animation and engaging storytelling, appealing to young audiences.

  • Best Nordic-Baltic Young Audience: The Photo That Came to Life directed by Mikk Magi was awarded for its creative and adventurous narrative, encouraging viewers to embrace new experiences.

  • Best Nordic-Baltic Commissioned Film: Theo Myling – My Heart Is stood out for its use of 90’s video game aesthetics to tell an emotional story with beautiful abstract visuals, achieving a balance between storytelling and musical expression.
