A Magical Weekend of Moomin Adventures, Crafts, Gaming, and Film Awaits at FAF25

The Fredrikstad Animation Festival is delighted to announce Moomin Family Day, a special celebration of the beloved Moomin universe. This event, taking place on Sunday, October 26, 2025, is part of the global Moomin 80 celebrations, marking 80 years since the publication of Tove Jansson’s first Moomin story, The Moomins and the Great Flood. The festival invites families, fans, and animation enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the whimsical world of Moominvalley, where adventure, warmth, and creativity come to life.

In addition to Moomin Family Day, the festival will feature the Moomin Animations: Thrills and Cuddles exhibition and there is a special Moomin themed program on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Fredrikstad Library, which is open to the public. 

From Book to Animation

Location: Fredrikstad Library Date: Saturday, October 25, 13:00 – 14:00

Jean Michel Boesch, the director of Christmas Comes to Moominvalley from Gigglebug Entertainment explores what it takes to turn an existing beloved story into a feature film quality animation. This talk will provide insight into some considerations taken when adapting a story to animation, while sharing any interesting stories about the production. There will be a screening of the TV segment Christmas Comes to Moominvalley, courtesy of our friends at Qvisten Animation.

This is a free event, but tickets are required.

Moomin Animations: Thrills and Cuddles Exhibition

Location: Foyer of Fredrikstad Cinema Dates: Tuesday, October 21 – Sunday, October 26, 2025

The Moomin Animations: Thrills and Cuddles exhibition, provided by the Moomin Museum, offers a nostalgic journey through six decades of Moomin animations. From the earliest black-and-white marionette films to the latest series, the exhibition showcases iconic digigraph prints, animation stills, and screenings of classic episodes. Visitors will explore how different adaptations have brought Tove Jansson’s timeless stories to life, each offering a unique take on the adventures of Moomintroll, Snufkin, and the rest of the Moomin family.

Whether you grew up with the famous Japanese series or the earliest versions, this exhibition promises to evoke cherished memories and introduce new generations to the magic of Moominvalley.

Moomin Treasure Hunt

Location: Fredrikstad Cinema and surrounding areas Time: All day (worksheet submission by 14:00 on Sunday)

Participants can pick up a Moomin Treasure Hunt worksheet at the cinema (in Norwegian), filled with clues that will guide them through a scavenger hunt around the city center. Completed worksheets must be returned to the Festival Box Office (open Thursday–Sunday) by 14:00 on Sunday. Six lucky winners will be selected in a drawing to win Mummifamilien finner et hjem provided by Cappelen Damm and other exciting prizes.

Moomin Pop-Up Store

The Fredrikstad Animation Festival will host a pop-up store of Moomin collectables in the foyer of the Fredrikstad Cinema. The pop-up will offer a delightful selection of Moomin collectibles, cozy merchandise, themed art supplies, and items from Tampere Hall Shop and the Moomin Museum exhibition. The shop invites visitors to bring home a piece of Moominvalley magic perfect for fans and collectors alike.

Crafts, Games and Face Painting

Location: Self-directed stations in the cinema foyer Time: 11.00 – 15.00

Kids and families can enjoy a variety of Moomin-themed crafts, including coloring pages, mazes, puzzles, and face painting. The activities are designed to spark creativity and bring the charm of Moominvalley to life. All materials are provided, and the stations are self-directed, allowing families to explore at their own pace.

Play in Moominvalley: Exclusive Game Demos

Location: Fredrikstad Cinema Time: 11.00 – 15.00 Free tickets must be booked in advance

Gaming enthusiasts can try their hand at two Moomin games developed by Hyper Games. Play an exclusive demo of Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth, which will come out in 2026! Festival goers can also try their hands at Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley. Players must sign up for a free timed slot to ensure everyone gets a chance to experience these enchanting games. Special editions of the games will also be available for purchase at Spilldall, directly across from the cinema. Tickets for this event open October 17.

Family Day will also feature several other exciting family friendly films in a program dedicated to Nordic cinema and tv. From the Norwegian classic, Flåklypa Grand Prix, to the latest Norwegian film, Reisen mot Nord, coming out in November, the program spans the lifetime of the Scandinavian animation industry. Three of the features from Nordic-Baltic Feature Film Competition will also be screened throughout the day. There will be a retrospective of Kalles Klätterträd, to celebreate FAF 25 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, Olof Landström’s work.

Ticket Information

Tickets will be on sale starting October 17 on animationfestival.no or fredrikstadkino.no. Walk up tickets can be purchased the day of at the cinema kiosk but space is limited so we recommend ordering in advance. Or you can purchase a Film Lover Day Pass to see as many films as you'd like for only 300 kr.
